Homeowner Maintenance: Items to be Watching with Record Breaking Precipitation

In the last 12 months, we have seen record-breaking rain and snowfall. These extreme weather events can create significant problems for homeowners. This month we will look at the four essential items you need to be watching for when record-breaking precipitation occurs.

  1. Check Crawlspace for Water: Water accumulation in the crawlspace can cause structural issues and damage the foundation of the house. Water that pools in the crawlspace can also create mold and mildew.

  2. Ensure Sump Pumps are Operating Properly: Sump pumps work continuously to remove water. Test your sump pump regularly to ensure it's fully operational, and if it is reaching the end of its lifespan replace it.

  3. Inspect your roof: Excessive rain and snow accumulation on your rooftop can add extra weight and pressure, leading to leaks and other problems. Regular roof inspections can help identify any issues before they become a more significant problem.

  4. Clean your gutters: Gutters play a critical role in protecting your home. Clogged gutters can lead to water backups and overflows, causing gutter damage along with the foundation of your house to get flooded.
